Durty Nellies A small terrace outside and then in to what appears to be a very tiny pub, but actually you head dowstairs to an enormous multi-roomed cellar rather nicely decorated in the standard international Irish pub style (Although the dusty electroliers are somewhat incongruous.) with walls covered with the usual Irish pictures, posters and miscellaneous bric-a-brac. The food is pretty good, especially the mixed grill, and the Guinness is fine too. Other draft beers include Kilkenny and Fosters. For entertainment there's a pool table, a darts board and a stage for live music. Strangely, the place always seems to be empty, and I've seen customers outnumbered by the staff on many occasions.
This used to be Durty Nellies 2 until the much lamented demolition of South Bar Street.

Behind Landmark Towers
Goose and Duck Located near the western entrance to Chaoyang Park, my favourite bar in China is one member of a small international chain. Draft beers include Fosters, Tiger and Guinness. There is a games room in the cellar and a veranda bar upstairs I think, but I never seem to get further than the front room. There are also tables on the patio at the front. The food is great with a wide choice of oriental and western dishes. I recommend the shepherd's pie, the black pudding supper, or best of all, roast chicken and chips. The staff are friendly and attentive and the live music every night is always very good. Happy hour 16.00-20.00.

Ritandongyi Jie, Chaoyang District
John Bull Pub The decor of this two storey pub is a remarkably good facsimile of a British pub, although when I visited on a Wednesday evening there was no atmosphere at all. The food is rather good, I had bangers and mash, and the beer is not bad. They have Guinness and Kilkenny and many others on tap.

Hard Rock Cafe A standard Hard Rock Cafe with the usual decor and nice American style food. I'm told the live music is rather good. American prices are definitely not cheap by Beijing standards. Later in the evening the place is full of tarts.

Landmark Lounge A pretty standard posh hotel bar in the Swissotel. In addition to a wide range of spirits (They'll even do a glass of Johnny Walker Blue Label.) and beers, you can choose from a variety of teas.

Milan Club A small dark bar typical of many here on "Bar Street". We sat at a table outside at the front and were bothered continuously by street vendors. Half price offer on Carlsberg bottles.

Paulaner Brauhaus Highly recommended. Live music in this nice bar which has a selection of Paulaner brews on tap including an excellent dunkel. I'm not sure whether these are all brewed here or imported from Germany. The styling is not really very German apart from some bierkeller-style bench seats inside. There are also tables on the pavement outside. The food is very good, German style of course, my favourite is the Jägerschnitzel.

Pig and Thistle A fair attempt at a replica "British Pub", but at an eye-watering 68RMB (£4.70) for a half litre of Guinness I wont be coming back in a hurry! Unusually for China, there seem to be no waitresses and you go to the bar to be served, like in a British pub. I was disappointed to see the the TV showing baseball rather than soccer. Draft beers include Carlsberg, Tiger, Kilkenny, Tsing Tao and San Miguel, as well as the aforementioned Guinness.

Schillers A pleasant small German bar serving excellent food and a range of German and German-style beers, including bottles of a rather fine Chinese Hefeweizen. Seating inside or on the verandah.

SHANGHAI
Flanagan's Decor in this "Irish" bar looks more like 50s/60s English styling, with lots of wood panelling in a large open room with a square island bar. A stage at one end for the rather good Phillipine band, and TVs for live footie. The food is good, I had fish and chips.

The Long Bar A long (you don't say) curved bar along one side of a narrow room overlooking the traffic on Nanjing Xi Lu. Friendly staff, good food and excellent Guinness.

ZHENGZHOU
White Horse The styling is typical in-hotel "English Pub" and we could be anywhere in the world. The live band did both Western and Oriental songs. The only draught beer is Carslberg. It was pretty quiet in here at 22.00 on a Friday.
