BOOTLE

Addison Arms (Yates's) Hand pumpvarious / Carling, Carlsberg, Heineken, Hop House 13, San Miguel This was a large standard modern Yates's, very noisy.
Now run by Stonegate, it's been well looked after and serves good value meals and quality real ale. Surprisingly very busy on a Tuesday afternoon.

Alexandra (Alexandra Hotel) (Dickie Lewis's) (Seaburn Inn) John Smith's / Carling, Coors, Foster's This popular, well looked after 60s boozer has tried a number of names since I first visited the Alexandra Hotel back in 2000, but it's back to the original name now. Other than names, nothing much seems to have changed, although it's been re-decorated and kept tidy in the intervening years.
I'm pleased to report that they've added a sign on the door of the gents, as I was confused on my original visit.

Cat and Fiddle (Jutland) Hand pumpguests, Tetley / Carlsberg, San Miguel From the outside this appears to be a tiny bar in the bottom of an office block. The very nice fake antique interior is much larger than expected. The real ale was of low quality on my last visit.

Hand pumpguests, Tetley / Carlsberg, San Miguel In 2003 I noted the decor had a maritime theme with ropes and lobster pots. That seems to have gone, and this one roomed "tardis", much bigger inside than the frontage suggests, now has pleasant plain decor. The small selection of real ales have been spot on when I've visited. Very busy on a Friday night. The menu looks to be excellent value.
Established 1802, this is Bootle's oldest public house, according to the menu.

Falstaff, Tetley / Carlsberg This impressive 30s building was closed and the windows boarded up in February 2000, but I am pleased to report that it has now re-opened. Inside is a nicely done lounge and a bar side not visited. There's also some tables in the front car park. LSTV.

Laburnum "Blobber"

Tetley This gem is splendid outside and in. The traditional layout features a bar at the front, and a large lounge and small back room served from hatches in the back of the servery, in a partition featuring stained glass, cut glass, and ceramic panels. Well cared for throughout although the tone is slightly lowered by numerous posters against drug taking, and a mop and bucket stacked in the corner. A small stage in the corner for live entertainment.

Linacre Boddingtons, Tetley / Carlsberg, Stella This impressive free standing building contains a plain bar, a pool room and a comfortable lounge in the traditional layout with the lounge served from a hatch across the corridor. 2 Irlam Road / Almadale Terrace
Madigan's Lighthouse Tetley / Carling, Carlsberg A large hall with nice fairly plain decor, very lively with a mixed clientele and a live band on a Friday night, and only slightly less busy on a Thursday. Late licence. I don't usually put music reviews in this guide, but the unpromisingly titled "Funky Monks" were excellent. A band who can follow a fine cover of James' Laid with Tom Jones' It's Not Unusual performed with equal aplomb are well worth seeking out!

Hand pumpusuals The Merton was an enormous knocked through one bar pub decorated with American memorabilia and aimed at a young clientele. LSTV and umpteen small ones. I re-visited on a Thursday evening in 2004 and they wanted to charge me 3 quid to get in.
Taken over by Wetherspoon's in 2009, it became a pleasantly decorated and popular member of the chain.
In 2016 it was sold by Wetherspoon's.

Mons (Mons) (Hill Top) John Smith's / Carling, Carlsberg, Heineken, Stella An enormous post-war roadhouse, one room with a very long bar, nicely decorated in traditional plastic pub style. When I visited the Hill Top on a Thursday evening the kids side was full of families dining.
More recently, refurbished and returned to its original name and definitely concentrating on food.
The pub is said to be named after the take-off airfield of the bombers which made the land available for redevelopment.

Riley's (Qudos) John Smith's / Carling, Foster's This enormous, extremely smoky, rather tatty pool and snooker hall in the former Bootle Odeon Cinema was, perhaps fittingly, pub number 666 in my researches when I visited it in 1999. Revisiting in 2004 I found it a lot less smoky but no less tatty, and no-one was playing pool at all. LSTV. A sign outside says "genuine free house" but I can't see the point if they're only going to offer this bog-standard selection of beers.
Now purely a snooker hall, I think.

Salisbury John Smith's / Carling, Coors My visit in 2003 recorded a three-room pub full of friendly locals. It's been opened up somewhat since then creating a large open pleasant place. The decor is nicely done and understated and the peculiar bar-stools look comfortable.

Star John Smith's, Tetley / Foster's, Miller This plain one-room boozer is well kept, but was very noisy and smoky when I visited. The interior is well faked and looks surprisingly old considering it's in a 1960s shopping centre.

Wyndham (Clarence) (Renaghan's) John Smith's / Foster's This two-sided pub is pleasantly decorated and kept spotless. The beer is cheap and live entertainment is often provided - On my first visit late on a Sunday afternoon a young girl was singing her heart out to an audience of about ten people. There is a snooker room at the back.
Not visited since it became the Wyndham.
