This two-sided pub looked a little down at heel from the outside in 2004. The lounge, however, was nicely done out with plain pleasant decor in two rooms partly knocked through, one of which had plenty of disco lights for the weekend. I didn't visit the bar side. There are some tables in the front yard.
Noted closed and boarded up in 2017, but in 2022 I found it back in action and looking very good inside and out.

Well done, mostly fake, traditional decor in this partially knocked through pub concentrating on the food trade, and conveniently located right next to Lea Green station. The much plainer bar side with a vinyl floor has a pool table.

A comfortable, pleasant, well cared for two sided pub. They must be doing something right because it always seems to be busier than the other pubs in the area.

A rather pleasant well cared for two sided pub with well done contemporary decor, aiming mainly at the pub food market but with a popular bar side as well. The food looks good.

Penlake Rail Club This clean and tidy social club is hidden up a back street behind St Helens Junction station. So well hidden, in fact, that one of the regulars asked how we had found the place! (My thanks go to Lawrence for informing me of its existence.) It features a large function room, a games room with two snooker tables, and a lounge which was closed when I visited on a Thursday evening.
Now closed.

In 2004 I described this as the pub with no name because the sign was missing when I visited and there was no indication of the name on the outside of the rather tatty looking building.
Returning in 2017, and again in 2023, it was much better looking outside, and inside a well cared for and comfortable two sided pub, serving quality cask Holt's Bitter.

A nice plain bar and a very pleasant lounge in this traditional pub which provided an oasis of quality ale in what would otherwise be a keg-only desert.

Wheatsheaf
PicPic
A truly splendid old multi roomed pub with an unusual layout inside. Watch out for the sloping floor at the "posh" end. There is no access between the ends except through the car park! The friendly staff serve from two counters plus a small hatch, a number of the side rooms have no counter at all. The decor varies widely between the rooms.
Grade II listed, as a fine example of inter-war "brewers' tudor".
