Wetherspoon's Barker's Brewery (Rose and Crown) (Wheatsheaf) |
This enormous 50s/60s pub spent the latter part of 2003 boarded up, and then after a period when one side re-opened it was closed for a major refurbishment, changing its name to Wheatsheaf at the same time. The well cared for interior of the Rose and Crown was pretty impressive, with Ionic columns and some nice woodwork and I was concerned that this would be lost in the refurbishment, but I was pleased to find that they'd done an excellent job, modernising while retaining lots of original features. It didn't last very long, however, and I noticed it had closed in November 2008. (The Wheatsheaf was actually the name of a long gone pub which was located nearby.)
Opened as a Wetherspoon's in January 2011, named after a brewery which was on this site. It has had a major interior refurbishment with changes to the layout.
Let's hope Wetherspoon's have better luck than on their previous attempt at a Huyton pub, the Oak Tree. And I think we can say they have - The real ale offering has improved in quality and breadth over the years.
