Addison Arms (Yates's)

This was a large standard modern Yates's, very noisy.
Now run by Stonegate, it has been well looked after and is surprisingly busy whenever I call in.

Alexandra (Alexandra Hotel) (Dickie Lewis's) (Seaburn Inn)
|
This popular, well looked after 60s boozer has tried a number of names since I first visited the Alexandra Hotel back in 2000, but it's back to the original name now. Other than names, nothing much seems to have changed, although it has been re-decorated and kept tidy in the intervening years, most recently resulting in a very attractive comfortable room.
I'm pleased to report that they've added a sign on the door of the gents, as I was confused on my original visit.

Aurora (Iona House)
|
Iona House was a rather plain looking social club, which closed early on quiet evenings, and closed permanently in the 2000s.
After spending time as a restaurant and then a coffee shop, in 2021 it became Aurora, a rather beautifully decorated bar.

Jawbone Tavern

In 2003 I noted the decor had a maritime theme with ropes and lobster pots. That seems to have gone, and this one roomed "tardis", much bigger inside than the frontage suggests, now has pleasant plain decor.
Established 1802, this is Bootle's oldest public house, according to the menu.

Laburnum "Blobber"
|
This gem is splendid outside and in. The traditional layout features a bar at the front, and a large lounge and small back room served from hatches in the back of the servery, in a partition featuring stained glass, cut glass, and ceramic panels. Well cared for throughout although the tone is slightly lowered by numerous posters against drug taking, and a mop and bucket stacked in the corner. A small stage in the corner for live entertainment.
Noted closed and boarded up in 2019.

Madigan's Lighthouse
|
A large hall with nice fairly plain decor, very lively with a mixed clientele and a live band on a Friday night, and only slightly less busy on a Thursday. Late licence. I don't usually put music reviews in this guide, but the unpromisingly titled "Funky Monks" were excellent. A band who can follow a fine cover of James' Laid with Tom Jones' It's Not Unusual performed with equal aplomb are well worth seeking out!

Merton (Wetherspoon's Merton Inn)
|
The Merton was an enormous knocked through one bar pub decorated with American memorabilia and aimed at a young clientele. LSTV and umpteen small ones. I re-visited on a Thursday evening in 2004 and they wanted to charge me 3 quid to get in.
Taken over by Wetherspoon's in 2009, it became a pleasantly decorated and popular member of the chain.
In 2016 it was sold by Wetherspoon's. It retained their style inside but without the food and range of real ales.
Closed and boarded up in 2024.

Mons (Mons) (Hill Top)
|
An enormous post-war roadhouse, one room with a very long bar, nicely decorated in traditional plastic pub style. When I visited the Hill Top on a Thursday evening the kids side was full of families dining.
More recently, refurbished and returned to its original name and concentrating on food including a carvery in one side, ale and bar snacks in the other.
The pub is said to be named after the take-off airfield of the bombers which made the land available for redevelopment.
Closed in June 2024.

PSD Sports Lounge (Qudos) (Riley's)
|
Riley's: This enormous, extremely smoky, rather tatty pool and snooker hall in the former Bootle Odeon Cinema was, perhaps fittingly, pub number 666 in my researches when I visited it in 1999. Revisiting in 2004 I found it a lot less smoky but no less tatty, and no-one was playing pool at all. A sign outside said "genuine free house" but I can't see the point if they're only going to offer the bog-standard selection of beers.
PSD: In 2023 I found it very pleasant inside with plenty of people playing pool, snooker or darts - Hence the name.

This two-sided pub is pleasantly decorated and kept spotless. The beer is cheap and live entertainment is often provided - On my first visit late on a Sunday afternoon a young girl was singing her heart out to an audience of about ten people. There is a snooker room at the back.
