Clarence Hotel
|
A splendid wood panelled and fake beam interior (in contrast with the plainer exterior) in this very popular two bar food-oriented pub. People were queuing for tables in the separate dining area when I visited on a Sunday afternoon in 1999. A subsequent visit on a Thursday afternoon in 2018 found it empty but still serving excellent real ale. The menu looks good, and good value.
On a Sunday in 2024 I found they no longer do food, and there were only a handful of customers. The ale continues to be great.

Harbour (Commercial)
|
A tiny bar side looking a little tatty in this street corner local. There's also a small, comfortable, well cared for lounge to the rear, with bell pushes for waitress service. The Commercial was a Cain's pub when I visited in 2006. Returning in 2012 I found the brewery connection had gone, but little else had changed apart, perhaps, for a coat of paint. The barmaid advised me that the shortest route from the bar side to the gents is via the street.
In recent years I have noted very limited opening hours here.

James Atherton (Railway) (James Atherton) (Three Bellends) (Two Helmets)
|
The Railway had a well looked after interior in a large two bar pub with friendly locals. The hand pump was not in use when I visited. There was no access between the plain bar side and the pleasant lounge side.
Noted closed in 2018, it re-opened, well refurbished, under its new name in 2019.
Renamed (temporarily) as The Three Bellends in October 2020 to protest the Government's handling of the coronavirus crisis, with signs depicting Johnson, Cummings and Hancock. As the James Atherton (and also the Two Helmets, on a similar theme) post-lockdown they are serving quality real ale.

Little Brighton Inn
|
The pretty, traditional two-sided interior is very well cared for. The small beer yard has an aviary. When I visited on a Wednesday afternoon the pub was empty. Noted shut in 2014 and derelict more recently.

New Brighton Hotel (Peggy Gadfly's) (Stag)
|
Peggy Gadfly's: One hand-pump not in use in this dark atmospheric wooden-floored Irish-style pub which has a number of rooms but only one counter.
Eighteen years later, I found the New Brighton Hotel was brightly and pleasantly decorated. The handpumps were still not in use. The exterior artwork is very impressive.

Perch Rock
|
One compact bar room at the front plus a two or three room lounge part with waitress bell pushes (not in use) and no counter. The entrance lobby has a nice "Yates's Manchester Ales" mosaic in the floor. The cask John Smith's was undrinkable when I came here in 1999 - no wonder all the regulars were ordering "smoothflow". On multiple subsequent visits I have enjoyed excellent ale here.
A reliable source of quality ales, usually including Landlord, and at a bargain price too, this pub is deservedly popular.

A nice interior with a wooden floor in one bar plus side and back rooms. The large front windows afford a view of the street and the fort and water beyond. The three hand pumps were not in use when I visited. Closed when I passed in September 2006.

Wetherspoon's The Master Mariner (RJ's) (Playa$ Lounge) |
This pleasant, busy, smaller than average Wetherspoon's has featured better than average service on my visits, and the food was good.
A substantial expansion into the building next door was started in 2022 and the pub was closed "until August 2022". This work has been abandoned and the pub is permanently closed.
