Angel (Angel Vaults)
|
A plain well cared for bar side and a large lounge side in this quiet friendly local. With only three regulars plus myself to accommodate, half the bar side was in darkness along with all the lounge side. Intriguingly, two large piles of sandwiches disappeared into a back room, but there didn't seem to be anyone there to eat them! Now closed and boarded up.

Anglesea

A beautifully maintained two-sided pub with a plain bar and a very nicely done out lounge. Always popular, with a friendly atmosphere.
A number of people have criticised, but the sign is spelled as I have shown.

Bank House "Banky" |
There were originally two pubs at the junction of Windsor Street and Upper Warwick Street. Nearer the river was a Bent's pub, and the other was a Walkers house called the Sefton Arms and known locally as Brown's. The latter had a quiz night as long ago as 1945. My thanks to Harry for this information.
Closed. Burnt out.

Brewery Tap (Grapes Inn)

A very small excellently preserved pub built into the corner of the former brewery.
After a period of closure following the demise of Cains, this has now re-opened.

Clancy's (Crow's Nest) |
A nice, clean and tidy, plain wood panelled interior to this two bar pub, rather let down by the scruffy exterior, and the one week old St Patrick's Day decorations! The barmaid couldn't work the till and didn't know how much a pint of bitter cost!
Now closed.

This pleasant boozer with two bars in three rooms is much larger inside than the small frontage on Sefton Street would suggest.

Dick Jennings
|
A plain tatty traditional street corner pub, one bar plus a scruffy back lounge. The music was much too loud when I visited. Formerly the Woods House, it was renamed after Richard Jennings, the manager in the 1940s and 50s.
Now closed. Despite reports of a planned conversion to housing, this was still standing derelict in 2018.

Empress
|
A nicely done out and well looked after pub with three rooms front-to-back but only one counter, in an unusually tall and narrow building.
Ringo Starr was born a few streets away, and spent part of his childhood living in the same street as this pub. An exterior view features on the sleeve of his album Sentimental Journey. Watch out for a succession of Beatles tourists taking selfies in front of the pub. Not many of them come in!
Reported to be closed and for sale in 2024.

The exterior was so scruffy and run down we thought the place was closed. Inside was much better and included an impressive mirrored ceiling over a small dance floor area. Completely empty on Thursday evening.
Now closed and demolished.

Globe
|
There are two bars plus a back lounge served from a hatch (with "Newsroom" etched in the glass in the doors) in this nice ale house which retains some original features, including leaded windows, and is well looked after. Definitely a local pub for local people, and perhaps the only one left open on Park Road.

This yacht club has a pleasant bar plus a function room behind, and offers views of large quantities of expensive maritime hardware. Access is via a long walk along the roads or a short swim across the water. The hand pumps were off when I visited in 1999. In 2024 I found this place closed.

Herculaneum Bridge "Peglegs"
|
This pub, now isolated in an area of new housing, is almost completely unspoiled and well cared for, a real hidden gem. The interior layout includes the traditional arrangement of a lounge side served only from a hatch at the back of the bar across the corridor. Built in 1901-2, it retains many of its original features. The bar back is a splendid wood and glass partition and the bar room and corridor have nice tiled walls. Accommodation upstairs.

Mount "Sixie" |
A plain pub with two bars plus a side room. It was very quiet and the lounge side was closed when I visited. The nickname Sixie dates back to the late 19th century practice of having a reduced price six day licence, which was introduced by the Licensing Act of 1872 to encourage pubs to close on Sundays. Now closed and demolished.

A pleasant three room pub with a small front bar, a larger lounge and a side room served from a small counter. A friendly local, kept clean and tidy inside, although the exterior was very tatty on my most recent visit.
It achieved brief fame in May 2013 when Prince Charles called in for an unscheduled drink.
